Movie Music Is Subtlely Powerful

Movie Music

Imagine yourself sitting in your living room. What would be better than to listen to soothing music, helping you unwind after a long day's work. Movies over the decades have been accompanied by catchy and beautiful music, often performed by world famous bands and singers. On reflection, one would surely remember the thrilling tunes of the James Bond series, the melodious tunes of The Sound of Music, the melancholic notes of Dr.Zhivago and the adventurous tunes of Ben Hur. On a recent note, many could reel off the notes of the Mission Impossible series and tunes from the recent Harry Potter and the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

While watching a movie one hardly tends to give any attention to the background music that plays in the course of the movie. With Hollywood movies it is even more difficult to do so. Movies coming out of Hollywood generally tend to give importance to screen play and acting prowess rather than the artistic side of music. Normally only a few notes of the whole song in itself are included, but even those are enough to arouse the interest of connoisseurs. Movie music until a few years back was an untouched domain, wherein movies only used to include songs of indigenous to the region. But with the turn of the millennium, movie music started to be influenced by countries outside of the area of the movie's roots.

Movie Music

Famous movie music producers like Howard Shore, Howard Blake, Hans Zimmer, David Newman, Christopher Young and James Horner are a few of the most popular music directors recent movies have ever seen, or rather heard! With movies like the Lord of the Rings, the Terminator series, Apocalypto, Spiderman, Ghost Rider, the Zorro series and the Ice Age series under their belt, these composers and music directors have dabbled in genres of music ranging from calypso, reggae, hip hop, rock, jazz and a lot more.

All these composers are geniuses in their own right. Each of these composers leads teams of composers, writers and performers in their troupe. Live performances by any of these people are sell outs and attract people from the political strata as well as the celebrity circuit on a regular basis. Once could almost say, all these people in their own right have made the movies that have touched their hand, an immediate success. Even after the movie has faded from the memory of a person, tunes or notes of a soundtrack often linger, and a person often wonders where he picked up such a beautiful tune.

In other words, movie music, which is designed based on the theme that the movie's plot follows, adds a certain amount of mystery to the proceedings and can be used to fill up areas of no dialogues in the movie that would appear bland and tasteless otherwise.

As Red Auerbach aptly put it, "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life". Music is the primal gift to mankind. It not only soothes the body but also the soul. In the words of Pat Conroy

"Without music, life is a journey through a desert."
